Dream Ahead Retires to Stud
Following consultations between the new owners of Dream Ahead it has been decided that the colt will retire to stud and will not race again. He retires to stud the winner of 5 Group 1 races, the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes at 2, and the July Cup, Haydock Park Sprint Cup and Prix De La Foret at 3. He was joint top rated two year old in Europe in 2010 with Frankel, and is currently the highest rated sprinter in Europe. Dream Ahead and Oasis Dream are the only horses since 1973 to win both the Middle Park and the July Cup.
Commenting, John O'Connor said 'We are delighted to acquire Dream Ahead for Ballylinch, he is the outstanding sprinter of recent years and his thrilling defeat of Goldikova in the the Prix De La foret over 7 furlongs means he could sire top milers as well as top two year olds and sprinters like himself.'
David Simcock, trainer of Dream Ahead added 'He's been a star right forn day one and has been a joy to train. He is the soundest and most straightforward horse you could wish to find and I will be lucky if I can find another horse like him. His performance in the Middle Park was outstanding, when he beat good horses like Strong Suit and Approve by an easy nine lengths. He's a great looking horse with a fantastic temperament and i am sure he will be very successful at stud. I wish his new owners the very best of luck with him.'
Dream Ahead's stud fee has been set at €17,500 (stg£15,000) and he will be limited to 130 mares in both hemispheres. The southern hemisphere rights to Dream Ahead have been sold to Emirates Park Stud in New South Wales and a southern hemisphere fee will be announced shortly.

Ballylinch Stud’s Managing Director John O’Connor has confirmed that the five-time Gr.1 winner Dream Ahead is to retire to stand at the County Kilkenny stud in 2012. A sensational two-year-old, Dream Ahead won three of his four starts, landing his maiden by nine lengths on his debut before completing a Gr.1 double in the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes.
His Deauville victory, where he defeated the subsequent French 2,000 Guineas winner Tin Horse (Sakhee), was described by Racing Post as, “A performance of pure class,” but even this was eclipsed by the startling superiority he showed over the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes winner Strong Suit (Rahy) and the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes victor Approve (Oasis Dream) in the Middle Park, where he cruised to the front and strode clear to score by nine lengths. He ended the season as joint European Champion Two-Year-Old, with another exceptional juvenile Frankel (Galileo), with a rating of 130. Dream Ahead did not reappear until Ascot in June, where he ran a promising race to finish fifth behind Frankel in the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes.
Sharpened up by that outing, he went on to land the Gr.1 July Cup at Newmarket in fine style, quickening impressively to beat the top Australian sprinter Star Witness (Starcraft) and the Gr.2 Duke Of York Stakes winner Delegator (Dansili). Two more Gr.1 victories followed in the Sprint Cup at Haydock and the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp, where he defeated the remarkable mare Goldikova (Anabaa) in a nip and tuck finish. He retires to stud as one of the best sprinters of recent times, having won a total of five Gr.1 races over six and seven furlongs.
Dream Ahead has a pedigree redolent of speed. His sire, Diktat (Warning) was a Champion Sprinter himself and has sired multiple Gr.1 winners. His dam, Land Of Dreams (Cadeaux Genereux), won the Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes at two and the Gr.3 King George Stakes at three. She in turn is out of the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes winner and Gr.2 Lowther Stakes runnerup Sahara Star (Green Desert), whose own dam, Vaigly Star (Star Appeal), was fast enough to finished second in the Gr.1 July Cup. Described by Racing Post as a “big, powerful colt, with a most taking manner” and by Timeform as “a tall, lengthy, good-topped colt, ” Dream Ahead won plaudits closer to home too. His jockey William Buick says, “He’s an amazing horse. He gave me a feel no other horse has ever given me.”, while his trainer, David Simcock says simply, “He has been a star since day one and I don’t think I’ll ever have a horse half as good.” Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock, who purchased Dream Ahead for £36,000 at the DBS Breeze Up Sale, said, “Dream Ahead has been an honour to be associated with. His outstanding race record, which climaxed in Sunday’s defeat over Goldikova, speaks for itself. He is tough, sound and genuine, and a very impressive physical specimen. I am delighted he will stand at Ballylinch as it is a top class operation, where he will be given the support of some fantastic mares, which he so thoroughly deserves.” O’Connor concluded, “There has already been significant international interest in Dream Ahead and he will be partly syndicated, with a limited number of shares being made available to breeders. He is a very exciting new addition to the Ballylinch stallion roster.”
